Drilling AustLon®

The most important factor when drilling AustLon® material is that new drills are kept sharp and that the drill is constantly cleaned. This avoids build up and compact of waste in the flutes and prevents the build up overheating. For non accurate holes the use of speed bores on spade drills is recommended. This causes very little heat build up and is faster. When using twist drills, test pieces should be used to sharpen the drill with correct lip clearance : too much clearance will cause the drill to dig in. At all times the work piece must be well supported during operations. For a good finish and sized hole, first a size smaller drill is used and then the hold is finished with the correct size drill.
